Alzheimer’s disease infusions

Kisunla and Leqembi are anti-amyloid infusions. They remove amyloid, a protein that builds up in the brain in Alzheimer’s disease, and can slow the decline in memory and thinking. They do not cure Alzheimer’s disease or reverse symptoms that are already present.

IV infusionEarly Alzheimer’s disease

Kisunla

(donanemab) IV

  • For early Alzheimer’s disease: mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia
  • Amyloid must be confirmed first, by an amyloid blood biomarker test, an amyloid PET scan, or a spinal fluid (CSF) test
  • Scheduled MRI scans watch for ARIA, a side effect that can cause brain swelling or small bleeds
  • Treatment may be stopped once a PET scan shows amyloid has been reduced to minimal levels

Not everyone qualifies

We review your memory testing, amyloid results, MRI, medical history, and medications to decide whether these infusions are safe and right for you.

About ARIA

ARIA is brain swelling or small bleeds that can happen with these infusions. It often causes no symptoms and is found on MRI, which is why scheduled MRI scans are required. Rarely, it can be serious. Tell your care team right away about a new headache, confusion, vision changes, trouble walking, or nausea. Call 911 for a seizure or signs of a stroke, and tell the emergency team that you receive this infusion.

What to expect

  1. Evaluation and amyloid testing

A memory evaluation with us, then an amyloid blood biomarker test, an amyloid PET scan, or a spinal fluid (CSF) test to confirm amyloid. Genetic (APOE) testing is recommended before starting, because it affects the risk of ARIA.

  2. MRI safety monitoring

A brain MRI before treatment starts, then scheduled MRI scans during treatment to watch for ARIA.

  3. Regular infusions with a neurologist on site

IV infusions at Evolutionary Care Infusion on a regular schedule, in the same suite as our practice.

  4. Ongoing follow-up

Regular visits with us to review how you are doing, your MRI results, and whether to continue.
